Ear Surgery

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a surgical procedure performed to correct large, protruding or otherwise deformed ears for a more proportionate appearance. Unlike most other plastic surgery procedures, otoplasty is most commonly performed on children, as the ears are typically finished growing by the age of four. Early treatment helps reduce teasing and any affect on self-esteem that large or misshapen ears may cause. Otoplasty may often be performed to correct ears damaged by an accident or injury.

Ideal Ear Surgery Candidates

Patients 5 years of age and older are the best candidates for otoplasty. Ear surgery is a suitable option for people who want to fix their protruding ears or are troubled by their ears’ disproportionate size. Otoplasty can also be used to treat people whose ear shape is the result of trauma or a congenital abnormality.

Patients who are generally healthy, don’t smoke, and don’t have any healing issues are the best candidates for otoplasty. Patients who are dissatisfied with the outcome of a previous otoplasty may potentially benefit from this procedure.

Dr. Nagy is the best at what he does! He has a wonderful bedside manner and was extremely awesome with all of my questions. I’m a little over one week post op and already so incredibly happy with my results. The office is impeccable and beautiful. The staff is friendly and always helpful. Big shout out to Kim, she went above and beyond - from being reassuring, caring, friendly and so so patient with insane amounts of nerves and questions that I had. She’s the best! From consult to post op, they are a phenomenal team that I would highly recommend.

The Ear Surgery Consultation

You should be prepared to discuss your current medications, any previous operations, and any pre-existing medical issues with Dr. Nagy during a consultation prior to ear surgery. Your ears’ position, size, and shape will be evaluated by Dr. Nagy.

An otoplasty candidate may require a few lab tests, and the candidate’s complete medical history will be discussed. Patients under 18 must have a guardian to assist and provide support before, during, and after the surgery.

Any potential complications, the anticipated results, and the precise steps involved in the ear surgery will all be discussed during the consultation. Dr. Nagy will help patients and guardians visualize the surgical techniques that can be created to set realistic expectations.

Once the patient is determined to be eligible for the procedure, a date will then be set for the surgery. Special instructions will be provided to help the patient prepare for an otoplasty.

How to Prepare for an Ear Surgery

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, preparation will depend on the age, lifestyle, and occupation of a patient. Regardless of age, an otoplasty patient must secure transportation before and after the procedure. This will help them get home safely. It is also best to have a companion for the first 24 hours after the procedure.

Before the otoplasty procedure, patients must arrange a comfortable resting area with enough pillows to allow support while sleeping. Otoplasty patients must sleep on their back and avoid putting pressure on the ears.

Otoplasty patients who are in school or have work should request their time off to ensure a smooth recovery. Make sure to schedule 5 to 7 days off to focus on recovery.

The body’s ability to heal works best when supported by proper nutrition. Prepare healthy meals with enough protein, vitamins, and minerals to ensure quick and easy recovery.

The night before the surgery, take a bath with basic soap and make sure the hair is washed thoroughly. On the day of the procedure, patients are advised to wear a button-down top that they can easily put on and remove.

The Procedure

Ear surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. Depending on the complexity of the process, it is normally completed in 2-3 hours.

During the otoplasty procedure, an incision is made behind the ear to remove or reshape the cartilage and adjust the size and position of the ears for a more natural-looking appearance. For children, this procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and sedation. Both ears may be operated on in order to achieve better balance. After all required changes have been made to the tissues of the ear, the incisions will be closed with the help of surgical sutures.

The results of the otoplasty procedure are permanent and scars will fade with time to become less noticeable.

Otoplasty Recovery

Following ear surgery, Dr. Nagy will cover your ears with a dressing. The dressing should be kept dry and clean as instructed. It is best to maintain a sleeping position where your head is not resting on your ears and to avoid unnecessary pressure around the ears. To protect the healing ears, it will be advised to wear button-up shirts during recovery.

Ear Surgery Cost

The price of ear surgery may be affected by a number of factors, including anesthesia fees, the surgeon’s fee, prescription drugs, and facility fees. Otoplasty is not covered by insurance because it is regarded as a cosmetic operation.
