LED LIGHT THERAPY – Let the Beauty of Light Help You Shine
Dr. Michael Nagy at Plastic Surgery of the Face & Body in Wall Twp., NJ is now offering LED light therapy treatments. LED (Light Emitting Diode) light therapy is a non-invasive, no-downtime med spa treatment offered as a stand-alone treatment, a treatment package, or as an add-on treatment to a service to help patients enhance or improve their skin, and/or address a particular skin issue. LED light therapy has been utilized for over 20 years by plastic surgeons, dermatologists, aestheticians, and med spas. It has been proven as a safe and effective treatment to address some of the following skin issues including:
-
Mild to moderate acne
-
Psoriasis
-
Rough, scaly, precancerous spots on the skin (actinic keratosis).
-
Rosacea
-
Sun damage
-
Eczema
-
Wrinkles
Oftentimes, LED light therapy is combined with other treatments such as facials or skincare products to provide even better results for patients. NASA first began studying LED therapy as a way to heal astronauts’ wounds. Today there have been advancements in the technology to improve delivery of the LED light, and we are excited to now bring that to our patients.
Here at Dr. Michael Nagy’s office Wall Twp., we utilize the LightStim MultiWave® Patented Technology to simultaneously emit multiple wavelengths (colors) of light. These wavelengths of light work together to give your skin a more healthy and glowing appearance. Each LED wavelength (color) of light provides unique therapeutic benefits. LED is non-invasive, painless and requires no recovery time. LED light therapy utilizes wavelengths of Blue, Amber, Light Red, Dark Red and Infrared light.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT LED LIGHT THERAPY
ARE THERE DIFFERENT KINDS OF LED LIGHT THERAPY?
The LED light is emitted at different wavelengths. These wavelengths correspond to different visible colors. These different colors penetrate the skin to different depths, thus the differences in what conditions LED light therapy can treat.
-
Red LED light therapy- penetrates deeper in the skin, and can assist with the reduction of inflammation and stimulate the production of collagen, a protein responsible for younger-looking skin that diminishes with age.
-
Blue LED light therapy- affects the uppermost or superficial layer of the skin. Blue Light has been effective in the destruction of P. acnes, the bacteria responsible for acne.
For many patients a combination of LED lights are used, as the colors are blended together to offer the benefits of each one in a single treatment.
CAN ANYONE RECEIVE LED LIGHT THERAPY TREATMENTS?
Essentially yes, as any skin type and color can use LED light therapy. LED light therapy doesn’t use ultraviolet (UV) light, so it doesn’t cause damage or burns to your skin. Always consult with your provider before receiving LED light therapy, as certain medications can increase sensitivity to light. Also, if you have a history of skin cancer you should avoid LED light therapy.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY LED LIGHT THERAPY TREATMENT?
Your provider will give you small goggles to wear during your treatment. This will protect your eyes from any light sensitivity. You will lie down in the treatment chair in a relaxed position and the LightStim™ device will be placed over your head. The device is open at both ends so you will be comfortable. The provider will set the timer and the treatment will start. Patients usually enjoy this treatment because they love the gentle, soothing, and relaxing warmth. It’s a great way to finish a Hydrafacial or other skin service!
HOW LONG IS A LED LIGHT THERAPY TREATMENT? WILL I NEED MULTIPLE TREATMENTS?
Treatments can average from 8 to 20 minutes, depending on your skin issue. LED light therapy can be added on to your skin treatment, which is a great way to help enhance your result. For the best results LED light therapy is best done in a sequence either once or twice a week for four weeks. After that you may need a maintenance treatment. This can be discussed during your consultation to develop the best treatment plan for you.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME AFTER LED LIGHT THERAPY?
There isn’t a recovery time for LED light therapy. Besides being careful about sun exposure in the 48 hours after treatment, you can return to your normal routine. Sunscreen should be worn after your treatment, and you can continue with your normal skin care regimen.
ARE THERE ANY POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS FROM LED LIGHT THERAPY?
It is rare to experience side effects from LED light therapy, but if you do, they may include redness, increased inflammation or rash. If you experience any adverse effects from your treatment such as pain, hives or any discomfort, please contact our office and we will have you speak with a provider.
